Low profile ceiling fans are designed to fit in homes that have lower ceilings. A standard ceiling is generally between 9-10 feet, and is ideal for regular mounted ceiling fans. However, any ceiling that is below 9 feet will usually require that a low profile ceiling fan be installed. These types of ceiling fans can be mounted flush to the ceiling and won’t hang down as far as a normal ceiling fan.

So what are the best ones on the market? Well that all depends on your budget, if you want a contemporary fan or a traditional one, and of course the size, which can be a big determining factor in the overall price. Here are a few lesser known manufacturers’ models you may not know about, that always seem to get good reviews:

Casablanca Isotope Contemporary Flush Mount Ceiling Fan (C30G45H) – this is a great looking fan that is perfect for most modern homes. It is 52 inches, so it will fit in a medium to large sized room of about 100-120 sq. feet. It comes with a one light system and remote control.

Minka Aire F519-MP Concept II Flush Mount Maple Ceiling Fan – this is a beautiful ceiling fan from one of my favourite manufacturers, Minka Aire. They really produce some eye catching ceiling fans, and this one is right at the top of the list. It is done in a rich maple finish and would be ideal for a kitchen or home office mount.

While you can go with a more well known brand such as Westinghouse or Hunter, the manufacturers above also produce some unique, high quality ceiling fans. I suggest at least checking them out to see what they have to offer. You may be pleasantly surprised by their selection and excellence, as I was.

Decorative ceiling fans can mean many things to each individual. One thing I have learned running this site, is that what one person finds beautiful and utterly stylish, another individual will loathe. This is why I find it tricky to pick out stylish ceiling fans that everyone appreciates. However, you can’t please all of the people, 100% of the time. So I will continue to bring you some of my favorite picks every few months.

The ceiling fans I have selected below will help stir some ideas for your home décor and give you a true sense of what is on the market. Many people are unaware such fans exists, which is what makes doing these types of posts so much fun. I love hearing your feedback, so don’t be afraid to let me know what you think about my choices. So without further ado here are my decorative ceiling fan choices:

Minka Flyte Ceiling Fan – this is a really elegant ceiling fan, but it is a simple and pleasing design that I feel most people can appreciate. It has a single light, 3 maple blades and a brushed nickel finish. The most unique aspect is the way the fan is mounted using the Downlink hanging system.

Palo Alto Possini Euro Design Ceiling Fan – this is anything but a simple design. It is extremely unique and the kind of centerpiece that makes visitors look up and take notice the moment they walk into the room. This has a low hanging design, so you need to have ceilings that are between 9.5-10 feet at least.

Casa Optima Black Stripe Ceiling Fan – just as it says, this fan is designed with sleek black stripes. It is the ideal ceiling fan for modern homes, and looks like it is something from the future (this could be good or bad depending on your tastes).

A bamboo ceiling fan is truly beautiful in my eyes. While most of these fans aren’t made entirely of bamboo, the blades at least are. Since bamboo is such a wonderful natural resource, I always recommend people buy bamboo ceiling fan blades when possible. They are incredibly durable, lightweight, and friendly for the environment.

I have been doing some thorough research on this subject and have come across several bamboo ceiling fans that I think meet the needs of both traditional and modern homes. As I always preach on this site, the final decision should always come down to functionality over décor, but in cases like this, you can have the best of both worlds. Here are a few that I really liked:

Monte Carlo 5ML52TB Mandalay Ceiling Fan – this is a stunning fan that would look great in any beach house or a home with a more modern décor. It has a heavy duty motor that can really push some serious air around the room, and it is ideal for a medium to large size room. The downside is the price, as it will set you back around $550.

Westinghouse 72440 Oak Harbor Ceiling Fan – this is a 5 blade fan that is expertly crafted and has very sensual lines and an eye catching finish. This is an extremely big fan at 56 inches, so it can be used in a great room, family room, etc. It is an ideal centerpiece and can really take over the décor of any room.

Tommy Bahama Natural Bamboo Ceiling Fan Blades – while the ceiling fans above have blades made of bamboo, keep in mind they aren’t entirely made of bamboo and aren’t 100% natural, especially the stained finishes. These blades however are 100% bamboo and have a natural finish. If you are looking for pure bamboo blades, these are highly recommended.

Here is an email I got the other day from a reader:

“Can you tell me if there is a light ceiling fan that I can install, just using adhesives?”

This was the first time I had heard about such a thing, and after doing some research, there really isn’t anything like this on the market. While it seems like a great idea, it really isn’t practical.

Many lightweight ceiling fans still need to be mounted the traditional way to keep them stabilized as they are spinning. If you can imagine, the adhesive would surely give way eventually and send the ceiling fan crashing down on some poor soul’s head.

Furthermore, I doubt there is a manufacturer who is willing to make such a fan, unless they like lawsuits!

The best advice I can give is that a light ceiling fan can be found by determining the number of blades, material used to manufacture it, and ultimately the motor and size of the fan itself.

Hunter outdoor ceiling fans are one of the most trusted models I know of. Many times I get emails asking me for advice about outdoor fans, and the Hunter line is one of the few I feel very comfortable about recommending. They have been in business for years (1886) and are easily one of the top ceiling manufacturers in the world. You really can’t go wrong with many of their models, and if it is faulty, it is backed by their ironclad guarantee.

Ya, I know this sounds like a commercial, but when I find a brand I love, I am not afraid to heap praise on the manufacturer. Today, there are too many poorly made products, and when a company does it right, they need to be commended. With that out of the way, here are a few Hunter outdoor ceiling fan models I have recommended in the past:

Hunter 23970 Oasis 3 Light Ceiling Fan – this is both an outdoor and indoor rated ceiling fan. It is one of those unique fans that will blend in with both traditional or modern décor, but I would lean more toward traditional styles. This fan is 54in, so it is designed to cool a fairly large area. If this is your taste, you may want to look at their Palermo model as well.

Hunter 23566 Sea Air Outdoor White Ceiling Fan – this is rated for outdoor use and it definitely has more of a modern design to it. As with most Hunter fans, it is designed to help reduce your electric bill by using an efficient motor that pushes more air, than your standard fans.

Hunter 25522 Sanibel 1 Light Ceiling Fan – this is easily the most stylish of the three fans. It has sail cloth blades, but instead of 5, there are only three. It is from their Gallery Edition collection, which features some really beautiful and stylish fans. I suggest checking out more of this line if you like what you see.

A brushed nickel ceiling fan is one of the more common finishes you will find. In the past we have talked about using various colors and styles to accent your room, but with a brushed nickel finish, it is a pretty versatile finish that you can use with just about any décor. It blends seamlessly into the background and doesn’t take away from the theme of your room.

Each manufacturer has a variation on this type of finish, but in general it is always a muted tone that fits in perfectly with any traditional or modern home. Of course there are more modern fans being done in this finish that really stands out. Some popular models you will find in this finish include:

Westinghouse 7867865 Vintage 52 Inch Ceiling Fan – this is always a very highly reviewed fan as most consumers love both its traditional looks and reliability. This has your standard 3-light fixture and reversible blades. It is designed to fit into larger rooms such as a dining room or great room.

Hunter 22460 The Astoria – this is another traditional fan that is done in rich maple and cherry wood accents. It comes with a bowl light fixture and it can be mounted at an angle or flushed, if need be. I am a big fan of Hunter fans and they have over 100 years of reliability to back up their products, so you can’t go wrong here.

Minka-Aire Fans F596-BN Cirque Contemporary Ceiling Fan – this manufacturer is quickly becoming one of my favorites for their unique designs and reliable products. This fan is done in brushed nickel, but has an artistic, cutting edge design that is an ideal fit for any modern home. It will definitely get many compliments and become a true conversation piece in any room you mount it.

52 ceiling fans are designed to be used in a large sized room that is about 225 sq. feet. Keep in mind that this measurement is the sum of both the width and length of your room size, multiplied together. For instance, if you had a room that was 10×10, you would then have a 100 sq feet room. Before heading out to the store to buy a new ceiling fan, you will also need to know the height of your ceiling. If it is between seven or eight feet, then you will have to look into getting a low profile fan.

Once you have your measurements, it is time to decide on the type of fan you want. There is a plethora of options available that you must consider, such as the lighting, controls and mounting system.

Many ceiling fans come with lights, with single and three-lights being the most common. The most common control for these fans is the pull chain, but many people including myself prefer a wall mounted control. There is also the option of using a remote, or buying a remote adaptable kit.

As for the mounting system, if you have a house with smaller ceilings, a low profile fan is your best option. If you have high ceilings then you are in luck and can choose from almost any type of ceiling fan, including commercial ceiling fans (ceilings higher than 10 feet).

Here is an example of 52 ceiling fans in both a standard mount and low profile mount:

Hunter 20803 Low Profile III 52-Inch Ceiling Fan – this is one of Hunters more popular flush mounted ceiling fans. Once mounted, it will hang about 6.5 inches from your ceiling.

Hunter 25517 Summer Breeze 52 In Ceiling Fan – this is one of Hunter’s popular standard mount fans. It can be hung in three various positions; flush, standard and angled.

One unique way to accent your room is with a colored fan, such as a pink ceiling fan. These fans will really stand out if you have neutral or muted tones in the room. Some people will use colored ceiling fans as the showpiece of the room, which can really help to highlight other matching shades placed strategically around the room.

If you want to decorate a room with a brilliant shade like pink, there are various pink ceiling fans on the market, all which offer something a little different. However, it depends on what kind of theme you are trying to create. Here are a few examples I might go with, while keeping my budget at a reasonable cost:

Hunter 44″ Pink Ceiling Fan (model# 20415) – this fan is perfect for a medium sized living room or family room. It is done in pink pastels and I would use a matching centerpiece and lamp shades, depending on the actual size of them room and décor.

Yosemite Home Decor Spectrum42P Ceiling Fan – this fan is done in a vibrant, dark pink and I would use more muted tones to match it. Perhaps with the trim and couch pillows. You could also buy a light kit with an off color pink to help give it some added flair and pizzazz. This would be ideal in a baby’s room or kitchen.

Craftmade BL52W Bloom Fan – this is a really beautiful fan that is shaped like a blooming flower, but it is done in several shades of soft pink pastels. It is ideal for a young girls room, or perhaps a guest room. This fan can be used in large rooms if need be.

All of these fans will bring their own unique charisma to any room, and will be admired by both you and your guests alike.

Commercial ceiling fans are generally used for businesses or in shops and garages, because of their powerful motors. However, this is the very reason is why many people are starting to buy them for their homes as well. The problem is that some of these homeowners are putting themselves at risk, and truly have no idea of the dangers these fans present.

If you want to install a commercial ceiling fan in your home, you need to have AT least a 10 foot ceiling. This means that the measurement from the floor to the ceiling equals or exceeds 10 feet. If you have a ceiling lower than that, it is highly recommended that you buy a regular ceiling fan for your home.

You also must take into account the size of the room as well. If you have a small room, stick with a 32 inch fan, if it is a medium sized room, 52 inches will do nicely, and if it is larger than 200 sq feet, you will want to buy a 54-60 inch fan.

If you have high enough ceilings, then I recommend some of the fans below:

Minka Aire F577 Concept Wet Commercial Ceiling – comes in a white finish and can be used indoor or outdoors, so it is ideal for homes with sitting porches or sunrooms. It uses three blades and can be used as your main light source for any medium sized room.

Quorum 27525-9 Drake Commercial Ceiling Fan – this fan is finished in antique silver and is ideal for medium to large sized bedrooms and family rooms. This model also comes in a few other finishes, includes 5 standard sized blades and has a lifetime warranty. It also comes with a wall control mount kit, and can be adapted to work with a remote control.

Finding cheap ceiling fans isn’t all that difficult, but the real question you must ask yourself is what is the right fan for my room?. Many people never consider that the easiest way to save money is by buying a properly sized fan. You see, far too many people make the mistake of buying a fan that is too big or too small for the room they plan on installing it in.

This is why I always tell my readers that you need to take some simple measurements of the room you plan on installing the ceiling fan in. Start by measuring the length of the room, then the width. Next, take both of these figures and multiply them together. This will give you the square footage of the room. For instance if you have a room that is 10×15, the sq. footage would be 150.

Next you will want to take the measurement of the ceiling. Measure from the floor of the room to the ceiling. If you have a small ceiling (7-8 feet or lower) then you will need to buy a low profile ceiling fan, if your ceiling is over 9 feet, then you can buy a normal fan without any worries.

Now that you are armed with this information, you will want to look for older model ceiling fans that match your exact specifications. These are ceiling fans that were made 3-4 years ago by the manufacturer and because of inventory backloads, most retailers will be looking to move these fans for heavy discounts. You won’t always see these on display, which is why you should call the retailers ahead of time and ask if they have any older models that fit your specs.

By using this method, I have literally saved thousands of dollars over the years, and with a little effort, you can save big money as well.
